Basic Training for Your NewfoundlandNewfoundlands need basic training skills before they begin to work in a desired field.
All dogs should attend puppy school to get the basics like sit, down, stand, stay, recall and leash manners. Basic control of your Newf is a must before you bring them into the water or hitch them to a cart.
Puppies and young dogs must be taught to focus among distractions, come when called, walk nicely on leash and stay on command.
Socialization is also extremely important. Regular interactions and play time with safe, healthy dogs is very important. Not to mention adults, children, eldery people, people in wheelchairs, etc. You should take your puppy everywhere to get them used to all different situations.
If the season is right you should also introduce your puppy to water as soon as possible.
No matter what your dog’s age, if they do not respond to basic commands or have leash manners, enroll in a positive-reinforcement training class and do at least two levels of basic obedience.
For both Draft and Water tests your dog needs to perform all exercises off-leash so off-leash control is an important goal to strive for.
Basic obedience and control is the foundation of all other dog sports. If you and your dog do not have a firm grasp of basic training skills you will not be able to train in draft or water rescue until you do.
